Who are the PKers

2006-07-18 by Viper

First let's define a real PK'er: PK of course stands for "Player Killer", which is pretty much the extreme of PvP. It's pretty much ruthless players killing and griefing anyone in sight - not much more to it really.

The problem, so to speak, is that PK'ers (at least the real ones) generally gets compared to players who just kill lowbies or the likes. While PK'ers do that too (hey, if it can be killed, then we kill it), we do also attack people way above our own level or even if we're outnumbered. It all depends on the situation, but still we don't prey on just lowbies, but we do kill them. The difference is that we have no problem holding our own against players our own level or in situations where we are outnumbered.Of course people who just prey on lowbies and can't kill anything close to their own level do exist, but they're not PK'ers - and more importantly; we're not them.

The thing is that many people tend to draw lines between how we as PK'ers play in a game and how we are as real persons. Most commonly we'll be called retarded, gankers, skillless, noobs and 13-15 year old immature kids - hell, we've even been compared to nazis (talk about not being able to seperate a game from reality, eh?). I guess some people do this to make themselves feel better, when they're getting killed by the likes of us. Other's do it because they actually believe that it is the truth.

So is this written because we don't like to be called all those things? No, not at all - we don't even care about it - it's usually a lot more fun when people do call us that. This is written to educate people and throw them a curveball. I've seen many people reach these stereotype conclusions about us PK'ers, even people who should know better, so it might be time to turn those people's world up-side down. Some people do firmly believe that what they say about us is true - especially when trying to judge us as persons - so why not mess with them by telling them the truth? I'm sure a lot of people won't believe some of what I will write, but I can assure you that nothing here is made up.

Everything will be based on SUN, which many PvP'ers and PK'ers already know as one of the finest PK guilds out there - and have been that for many, many years. It's also the only guild I can actually vouch for and give accurate information on, so it's natural that I'll use SUN as the "example".

So what kind of people are in SUN? What makes up this PK guild that will kill, grief, scam and do whatever they want in the name of fun in a game?

To start off with there's no single person in SUN under the age of 18. A quick stab at our average age would probably be somewhere around 25-27 years old.

In SUN there's both men and women, all sharing the same view about PK'ing in games.

In SUN there's married people, some with children.

  • We have people who work with young people at youth centers.
  • We have people who work as teachers.
  • We have people who work as investment bankers.
  • We have people who own their own companies.
  • We have people who work as project managers.
  • We have people who oversee infrastructures of the internet in certain parts of the world.
  • We have people studying to become doctors.
  • We have people who could apply for Mensa membership.
  • We have people working for game companies in various positions.
  • We have people coaching national teams in competitive sports.
  • We have people working as foreign news correspondents.
  • We have people managing various company divisions with many people under their wings.
  • We have people working as lawyers.
  • We have people working for animal rights organisations and Amnesty International.
  • We have people who work as UN peacekeepers.

Of course we also have people studying to become various things, we have system administrators, designers, programmers and everything in between.

So what's the point of all of this? Well, it's to show you that PK'ers, at least those in SUN, are just like everyone else. The difference is that we look for a different type of gameplay apart from what the mainstream looks for. People don't understand us or the way we want to play, so they call us all the typical things because it's what makes sense in their world. But in reality we aren't any different, only what we want out of a game is different.

And if there's anyone who knows that we're playing a game when we do what we do, then it's us. As Travis from SUN once wisely said: "We can grief and get griefed by people in the game, engange in huge trashtalk sessions and afterwards go out and get a beer with them." It's just a game and we don't put any more into it than we can afford to lose - and most importantly: We don't take it personally. It's a way to have fun and relax, so that's what we do. Our way of fun just differs from what most people tend to find fun, but that's not really our problem.

So there you have it, the truth about one of the most well-known PK guilds out there. People just like everyone else, but simply looking for something else. Isn't diversity great?
